September 2012
Q&A with Daniel Pink
Daniel Pink, best-selling author and a keynote speaker at our upcoming 63rd Annual Conference in Baltimore, chatted with us by phone recently about his keynote, "A Whole New Mind," and about his very popular book of the same title. Our conversation ranged over a host of topics, particularly Pink's premise: The future belongs to those with a different kind of mind--"designers, inventors, teachers, storytellers--creative and empathic 'right-brained' thinkers." Pink says three forces--abundance, Asia, and automation-- drive this shift away from the "narrowly reductive and deeply analytical" form of thinking that has dominated American society for a century. Here is a slice of our conversation. Pink answers seven questions; many are of special interest to those concerned with dyslexia. Read More.
Empower Youth Symposium to be Held in San Diego
On October 6, 2012, the San Diego Branch of IDA will host their first-ever Empower Youth Symposium - A Day for Those Who Learn Differently, geared towards children and their parents, at the David & Dorothea Garfield Theater in La Jolla. The goal of the event is to empower and inspire pre-teen and teen students with learning differences such as dyslexia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) who struggle to succeed academically and emotionally. Read More.
Inaugural Parent Conference Registration is Open
Family
IDA has set the standard for training professionals in the most up-to-date, research-based assessment, remediation, and research-to-practice tools in the world.  In recent years, more and more parents have attended the annual IDA conference looking for ways to help their children with dyslexia. So we've decided to dedicate a day and a half to a child's biggest supporters and advocates, his or her parents. The Inaugural Parents Conference offers a mix of parent-only and parent/professional combined opportunities, including sessions, social events, and interactive gatherings. Read More.
Neuroscience Meets Twitter!
How fitting that the IDA's first "conference tweet chat" is taking place at one of our most forward-thinking sessions, "Neuroscience in the 21st Century: Where are we going?." This symposium, chaired and organized by Dr. Gordon Sherman, convenes October 24 (8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.) at our 63rd annual conference in Baltimore, MD. During the symposium (and before), we will monitor (but not project) a Twitter feed, from which we will pull questions for our distinguished panel of speakers.  Read More.
Orton Oaks to Hold Reception in Baltimore for Longstanding IDA Members
IDA's foundation has been secured by its many dedicated members.  Some of those members have been a part of the organization for as many as 61 years and others for 50 years or more.
IDA wishes to honor all those who have been members of IDA for 25 years or longer with a special reception on Friday, October 26th, during the upcoming IDA Annual Conference, from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm, just prior to the President's Celebration. Read More.
